Deerfield Park District's Chess Club is geared for youth grades K-12. Players improve their skills and strategies and take part in local tournaments. Polina Katsen, our instructor, is a Deerfield parent with many years of teaching and competing at tournament level chess.
Levels of Play
Level 1 is for players who do not know how to move the pieces or have limited experience with the game.
Level 2 is for those who know how to move the pieces and capture and opponent's piece. You should have a basic understanding of the game and be ready to learn strategies and ideas behind the moves.
Level 3 is for those who have played in a club and have an understanding of en passant, discovered check, and checkmate. You should be ready for advanced strategic instruction.
Level 4 is for those who are more experienced in chess and are ready to study game openings.
Level 5 is for experienced chess players who are interested in studying middle game.
Level 6 is for experienced chess players who are interested in continuing to study ending strategy.
Level 7 studies and analyzes the best games of the most famous chess masters of all time.
Level 8 teaches the integration of advanced tactics into your chess skill's arsenal.
Level 9 studies and develops strategy plans for advanced players
Opportunities for tournament participation will be part of the curriculum.
